What is descriptive statistics?

Descriptive statistics summarise what a dataset actually contains. Instead of listing every number, they compress the same information into a few measures: the mean and median describe the centre of the data, the standard deviation describes the spread, and quartiles and percentiles describe position. A descriptive analysis never proves anything about a larger population — it only describes the numbers you have.

Population vs. sample statistics

A population statistic describes every member of the group you have (for example all sales records in a quarter). A sample statistic describes a smaller group you measured and is usually calculated with the sample formulas, which divide by n minus one instead of n. The difference matters: sample variance and sample standard deviation use n minus one to reduce bias in an estimate of a wider group.

How to calculate mean, median and mode

The mean is the arithmetic average: add every value and divide by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the average of the two middle values for an even-sized dataset. The mode is the most frequent value, and a dataset can have one mode, several modes or no mode at all.

What is standard deviation?

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance and describes how far the values typically sit away from the mean. A small standard deviation means the numbers cluster tightly around the centre; a large one means they spread out. About two-thirds of the data usually falls within one standard deviation of the mean.

What are quartiles and percentiles?

Quartiles split a sorted dataset into four groups: the first quartile Q1 is the 25th percentile, the second quartile Q2 is the median (50th percentile), and the third quartile Q3 is the 75th percentile. The interquartile range (IQR = Q3 - Q1) covers the middle fifty percent of the data and is the basis of the outlier fence.

How does outlier detection work?

The most common method is the IQR rule: any value below Q1 - 1.5 * IQR or above Q3 + 1.5 * IQR is flagged as a potential outlier. Outliers are reported as possible unusual observations, never as errors, and are never removed automatically.

How to use the CoveScreen Statistics Generator

  1. Paste or type your numerical data, or upload a CSV or TXT file.
  2. Review the dataset preview: valid values, missing values and invalid entries.
  3. Read the descriptive statistics, frequency distribution and charts.
  4. Check the outlier report and refine the data with filters or deduplication.
  5. Compare against another dataset or copy or export the statistical report.

Frequently asked questions

Is this statistics generator free?

Yes. The Statistics Generator is free to use, with no account, no upload and no payment required.

Can I upload CSV files?

Yes. CSV and TXT uploads are supported, including files with a header row. CoveScreen detects numeric columns so you can pick the column you want to analyse.

What statistics can this tool calculate?

The tool calculates count, sum, mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, population and sample variance, population and sample standard deviation, mean absolute deviation, coefficient of variation, quartiles, five percentiles, skewness, excess kurtosis, geometric mean, harmonic mean, root mean square, and the interquartile range.

What is the difference between sample and population variance?

Population variance divides the squared deviations by n, while sample variance divides by n minus one. The sample version is used when the data is a sample of a larger group and corrects for estimating that group from a smaller set.

How is standard deviation calculated?

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance, so it is expressed in the same units as the original data. Population standard deviation uses the population variance; sample standard deviation uses the sample variance.

How are outliers identified?

Using the interquartile range method: values below Q1 minus 1.5 times the IQR or above Q3 plus 1.5 times the IQR are flagged as potential outliers.

Can I export statistical results?

Yes. You can copy results to the clipboard, export the analysed dataset and statistics to CSV, and print or save a PDF report from the browser.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. Datasets are parsed and analysed locally in your browser. CoveScreen does not upload your data to a server, store it permanently, or transmit it to third-party services.

Can I compare two datasets?

Yes. The comparison view calculates statistics for two datasets independently and compares means, medians, standard deviations, ranges and sample sizes side by side. No significance testing is performed.

Is this tool suitable for academic analysis?

It is well suited for teaching, coursework, business reporting and preliminary data checks. For advanced or inferential statistics, dedicated statistical software is recommended.
