Production CI/CD Pipeline Patterns & Quality Gates
Behind the scenes: how our team builds automated delivery pipelines with zero-downtime blue-green rollouts.
From Git push to automated canary verification and production deployment.
Shipping code with confidence requires automating every step between a developer pressing 'git push' and the code serving live traffic. Here is how modern engineering organizations structure their deployment pipelines.
Phase 1 focuses on Pre-flight Gates. Before code ever reaches a build runner, commit hooks and branch protection policies execute static analysis, formatting checks, and secret scanning to prevent API credentials from ever being checked in.
Phase 2 runs the Automated Test Suite. Fast unit tests execute in parallel within 60 seconds, followed by integration tests with ephemeral database containers. Builds are automatically halted if test coverage drops below agreed thresholds.
Phase 3 builds Immutable Artifacts. Containers are compiled using minimal base images (such as Alpine or Distroless) and scanned against CVE vulnerability databases. Before pushing to the artifact registry, images are cryptographically signed.
Phase 4 executes Canary Rollouts. Instead of updating 100% of hosts at once, traffic is split: 10% routes to the new release while monitoring error rates and latency. If error budgets are maintained over 10 minutes, traffic shifts automatically to 100%.
