IT Incident Response Command Cheat Sheet & Runbook
A fast-reference triage guide and command cheat sheet for on-call engineers handling P1/P2 production outages.
5-stage triage protocol: Detect, Triage, Contain, Resolve, and Learn.
When a production service degrades, speed and calm discipline determine whether the event resolves in ten minutes or cascades into hours of downtime. Keep this runbook accessible during triage.
Stage 1: Ingestion & Verification. Check synthetic monitors and external error rates before jumping to conclusions. Confirm whether the incident affects all tenants or a single geographic zone.
Stage 2: Emergency Communication. Open the incident war room immediately for P1 incidents. Appoint one Incident Commander whose sole job is coordinating mitigation, and one Communications Lead who updates the public status page every 15 minutes.
Stage 3: Immediate Containment. Prioritize stopping the blast radius over finding the root cause. If a new deployment occurred in the last 30 minutes, revert it immediately. If traffic surge is exhausting database pools, shed non-essential background worker traffic.
Stage 4: Post-Mortem & Blameless Learning. Within 48 hours, conduct a blameless post-mortem examining the systemic conditions that permitted the failure, creating actionable tickets with assigned owners.
